So our interest in being able to present and enable conversation on Kano ideas and intentions is relevant to us and we believe the judo family at large. So it is our pleasure to be able to present This seminar by Lance Gatling – Jigoro Kano and Judo\, the secret behind the man. \nIt is well known that Kanō frequently spoke about his jūdō philosophies for many decades\, but he never ever disclosed their origins\, nor their exact meaning which has escaped jūdōka  ever since.  His writings were not only influenced by ancient Eastern philosophy\, but also from 19th century English philosophers. \nWhile living in Japan\, Lance Gatling has studied and researched Jigoro Kano for the past15 years\, discovering much that has not been seen for nearly the past 100 years.  During this seminar Lance will be present materials originated by Kano on a wide range of topics that include; \n\nKanô’s judo philosophy; Its origin and meaning\nKanô ‘s view of education\nHis thoughts on jûdô versus today’s sport judo\nThe five historic judos\nHis Twelve Principles of Judo\n\nMany of these concepts have never been discussed before and through his unique understanding of Kano\, Lance will reveal a side of Kano we were not aware of \n\n\nPresenter:  Lt. Lance Gatling\n \n\nBiography: Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Lance Gatling\, Kōdōkan Jūdō 3 dan\, Nihon Jūjutsu 5 dan renshi\, Director / Instructor\, US Embassy Judo Club Tokyo\, Judo and Martial Art author and lecturer\, Researcher of Kanō Jigorō for over 15 years. Resident in Japan over 35 years\, Tokyo Judo Federation board member.After the seminar Lance will be joined with Hayward Nishioka and Dr. Michael Callan\, who will take questions and discuss aspects from the seminar.\n\nPanel:  Hayward Nishioka\n \n\nBiography: Hayward Nishioka 9th Dan is a highly respected judoka from Los Angeles. He has been a very influential member of Nanka\, always willing to share his thoughts and advice on judo to all. Hayward always has something interesting to say. Hayward is the retired Professor of Kinesiology and Health\, Los Angeles City College for 41 years teaching judo.  Hayward has been an integral force for Judo in the USA\, achieving much as  competitor\, coach and referee at the highest levels. As a former A-Level competitor\, he placed 5th in the World Championships twice\, A Pan-American Gold Medalist\, US National Champion multiple times and US overall Kata champion. Hayward has been the Head Coach for the US at several international tournaments. As a recognized A-Level Referee Hayward has also done duty at the World Military Ganes\, World University Games\, Pan-American Games\, Kano Cup\, Fukuoka Cup and several European open tournaments as well.In his Judo Leadership roles\, Hayward has been a past President of California Judo Inc\, Southern California Collegiate Judo Association and Nanka. Hayward Nishioka is the author of many successful Judo publications\, including; Foot Throws\, The Judo Textbook\, Judo Heart and Soul\, Training for Competition Judo\, (all from Ohara Publications) and Excellence in Judo (Palacio Publications). His reach also  includes over 150 judo articles in various magazines and 35 videos on judo as well. Hayward Nishioka has received the following Honors; Kodokan Kenshusei\, selected to demonstrate Nage-no-Kata at the All Japan Championships 1962\, Has been inducted into both USJF\, USA Judo and Black Belt Hall of Fame.\n\nPanel:  Dr. Michael Callan\n \n\nBiography: Mike Callan is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology\, Sport and Geography and head of the i-dojo International Judo Research Unit at the University of Hertfordshire. Author of ‘The Science of Judo’ he has published over 50 academic papers\, including several on judo history and he founded the Bowen History of Judo Archive in the UK. He has extensive experience of providing coach education and consultancy around the world. He is the President of the International Association of Judo Researchers\, Education Director of the Commonwealth Judo Association and Managing Director of the Judospace Educational Institute. He has worked in the International Federation Services team for judo at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games\, His PhD relates to support for judo players in an educational environment. Born in Rio de Janeiro\, Brazil\, and having moved to United States in 2006\, he joined the Coast Guard in 2009. Tiago started his training in Judo when he was only 4 years old back in Brazil\, and he holds a 4th degree black belt in Judo and Black belt in Brazilian JiuJitsu. Tiago is the current US Armed Forces Judo Team Assistant Coach. \nTiago has been a member of the US Armed Forces Judo Team since 2011 when he was first selected to participate at the 2011 CISM World Military Games in Rio de Janeiro\, brazil\, his hometown\, where the Team ended up finishing 9th Place overall. Tiago has been a member of the team since then. He was also selected to the 2015 CISM World Military Games in South Korea but couldn’t participate due to budget issues\, and was present at last years’ 2019 CISM World Military Games in Wuhan\, China\, the second biggest sports’ event in the world\, receiving more than 10\,000 athletes from over 120 countries. \nTiago has a vast international tournament experience\, competing in four different continents\, including countries such as Brazil\, Japan\, China\, Russia\, Belgium and more. In addition\, Tiago is a Brazilian JiuJitsu and Judo coach at the UFC Gym in Baton Rouge\, Louisiana. DESCRIPTION:Good morning everyone\, \nI would like to invite you to our upcoming USJF/Nanka Teachers’ Course scheduled at the Gardena Judo Club on Sunday\, 19 April\, 2020 from 8:30-6:00 pm. This course aimed at budding assistant instructors\, provides training in developing your teaching skills and effectively delivering material so your students clearly understand and are better able to perform their Judo skills. This will also improve your Judo skills as well since you will have to perform the demonstration and provide effective feedback to your students. \nBring your Judogi and be prepared to deliver a lesson plan. Bring your notebook and pen/pencil to take notes and create/modify your lesson plan. Concentrate your time on preparing and delivering a concise lesson plan to a group of students successfully. There is litany of resources on the USJF Teachers’ Institute website to draw helpful information from to assist you in clearly and efficiently presenting a Judo lesson plan. You can complete the other required certifications later if you’re limited in time. \nEach candidate will write a lesson plan prior to their lesson demonstration.  Each candidate will give two different lessons during the course.  Here is an example of a veteran instructor’s lesson plan.  You will be divided into two groups presenting your lesson plan and being critiqued on your delivery. Throughout the day\, you will build upon each other’s demonstrations and make improvements on your delivery each time. But\, don’t wing it. It will show. Your evaluation will focus on how you deliver your lesson plan as an instructor. Yes\, it is vital to be able to demonstrate the technique. But\, it is just as important to know how to teach someone a technique in a clear\, coherent manner with useful feedback as your students practice the technique.  Remember this mantra; WHOLE\, PART\, WHOLE for teaching. \nOnce you have completed Saturday’s course\, in order to receive your Teachers or Assistant Teachers’ Certification\, you will need to complete the following; \n\nComplete theTeachers’ Course online test.·\nFulfill the certificate requirements;\nSafesport\nCDC Concussion\nBackground check\nFirst Aid/CPR:  Certificate (online) The Red Cross offers online Adult\, Child and Baby First Aid/CPR coursesfor only $30 and at your convenience.  This is a little more comprehensive than just an Adult First Aid/CPR course.  \nFor some of you\, you may have some of these certificates on record with the USJF from prior certifications\, such as coach’s\, referee’s or a recent rank promotion. Please verify that your certifications are within the last two years in order to be valid. Otherwise\, you will need to re-certify any one of these certificates. If your background check is invalid or incomplete\, submit a new application as soon as possible since this process is the most time consuming and will take a few weeks to complete.  You have plenty of time to complete these certifications well in advance. Having these certifications will also benefit you in receiving your coaching or referee’s certifications as well as your next promotion.\n\nADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE: \nSince the USJF Office will grant your Teacher’s Certificate once you have completed the course\, when you have completed the online exam\, the Teachers’ Course\, all of your certifications\, background check successfully and a headshot photo of yourself\, please forward your certificates in a .pdf format directly to Terri Weibel at adminmgr@usjf.com.  Title your certificate emails to Terri as “USJF Teachers’ Course certifications-(Your name)“. Send it in as once package to minimize the administrative burden rather\, one by one. \n\nSafesport\nConcussion\nFirst Aid/CPR\nBackground check\nHeadshot\n\nThe USJF will be automatically notified that you have completed the online test. \nThey will keep your certificates on file. But\, in the same token\, keep a record of your certificates as well and know when to re-certify in order to stay current. If you are missing any of your certificates\, background check\, and online examination or demonstrate a deficiency in your teaching ability\, you will not be granted your teaching certificate until you have fulfilled your requirements. You may ask the USJF if any of your certificates are out of date. The headshot will be place on your USJF Teacher’s Card. \n\n  There are additional subjects that you may review to enhance your presentations. Review these presentations for your course preparations. \nOnce you are certified as an Assistant Teacher\, your Assistant Teacher certification is valid for four years. You will still have to renew your First Aid/CPR\, Safesport and Concussion during that time since these certifications are only valid for two years. After two years\, you may simply re-certify online your Assistant Teacher certification through the USJF without attending another Teachers’ Course. \nWe may finish around 5:30-6:00 pm.  Be prepared. DESCRIPTION:GUYS IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!!\nAll Nanka Athletes 13 years of age and above going up to the San Jose Buddhist Tournament have been invited by Mike Swain and the San Jose State Judo Team for an Open Practice from 3pm to 5pm on Saturday February 15\, 2020. Practice will be run by San Jose State Head Instructor Kosuke Tanaka. Other San Jose Instructors like Mike Swain and Marti Malloy will also be present at the Open Practice as well as one of Nankas own Chuck Jefferson. This is a great opportunity to learn from some great instructors and get some extra practice in before the tournament.

DESCRIPTION:Seasons greetings everyone\, \nWe’re in the midst of a very busy holiday season with family and friends. \nI would like to inform you that there is a change in the next USJF Teachers’ Course on Sunday\, 12 January\, 2020\, which will now be held at the San Fernando Valley Japanese American Community Center\, the home of the San Fernando Valley Judo Club. \n\nSan Fernando Valley Judo Club \n12953 Branford St. Pacoima\, CA  91331 \n\nAttached you will find the revised sanctioned registration form for this course. Share this email with someone you know that may be interested in the program or for your rising leaders in your Dojo. Please RSVP your attendance by replying to this email because of the limited class size of 12 students only. \nAs an assistant instructor\, you will continue to expand your Judo experience and knowledge by passing it down to your students. You will be officially accredited and recognized by the USJF.  You will be taught the latest teaching methods and trends and given back valuable feedback on your teaching delivery and effectiveness to be a more effective instructor. And perhaps\, we will learn a different style of one of your favorite techniques. \nAgain\, please mail in your registration form and fees postmarked by 3 January\, 2020. However\, please make sure that you complete your required certifications and background check and submitted to the USJF Office  before the course. If your submissions are late\, the USJF Office will assess a $50 late fee. If you have not completely submitted your required documents with ten (10) days after the complete of this course\, you will have to retake this course. In this case\, the late deadline would be Thursday\, 23 January\, 2020. I would highly recommend submitting your USJF background check application as soon as possible. \nBring your Judogi and be prepared to deliver a lesson plan. Bring your notebook and pen/pencil to take notes and create/modify your lesson plan. Concentrate your time on preparing and delivering a concise lesson plan to a group of students successfully. There is litany of resources on the USJF Teachers’ Institute website to draw helpful information from to assist you in clearly and efficiently presenting a Judo lesson plan. You can complete the other required certifications later if you’re limited in time. \n Each candidate will write a lesson plan prior to their lesson demonstration.  Each candidate will give two different lessons during the course.  Here is an example of a veteran instructor’s lesson plan.  You will be divided into two groups presenting your lesson plan and being critiqued on your delivery. Throughout the day\, you will build upon each other’s demonstrations and make improvements on your delivery each time. But\, don’t wing it. It will show. Your evaluation will focus on how you deliver your lesson plan as an instructor. Yes\, it is vital to be able to demonstrate the technique. But\, it is just as important to know how to teach someone a technique in a clear\, coherent manner with useful feedback as your students practice the technique.  Remember this mantra; WHOLE\, PART\, WHOLE for teaching. \n Once you have completed Saturday’s course\, in order to receive your Teachers or Assistant Teachers’ Certification\, you will need to complete the following; \n\nComplete theTeachers’ Course online test.·         \nFulfill the certificate requirements;\nSafesport\nCDC Concussion\nBackground check\nFirst Aid/CPR:  Certificate (online) The Red Cross offers online Adult\, Child and Baby First Aid/CPR coursesfor only $30 and at your convenience.  This is a little more comprehensive than just an Adult First Aid/CPR course.  \nFor some of you\, you may have some of these certificates on record with the USJF from prior certifications\, such as coach’s\, referee’s or a recent rank promotion. Please verify that your certifications are within the last two years in order to be valid. Otherwise\, you will need to re-certify any one of these certificates. If your background check is invalid or incomplete\, submit a new application as soon as possible since this process is the most time consuming and will take a few weeks to complete.  \n\nADMINISTRATIVE CHANGE: \nSince the USJF Office will grant your Teacher’s Certificate once you have completed the course\, when you have completed the online exam\, the Teachers’ Course\, all of your certifications\, background check successfully and a headshot photo of yourself\, please forward your certificates in a .pdf format directly to Terri Weibel at adminmgr@usjf.com.  Title your certificate emails to Terri as “USJF Teachers’ Course certifications-(Your name)“. Send it in as once package to minimize the administrative burden rather\, one by one. \n\nSafesport\nConcussion\nFirst Aid/CPR\nBackground check\nHeadshot\nThe USJF will be automatically notified that you have completed the online test.\n\nThey will keep your certificates on file. But\, in the same token\, keep a record of your certificates as well and know when to re-certify in order to stay current. If you are missing any of your certificates\, background check\, and online examination or demonstrate a deficiency in your teaching ability\, you will not be granted your teaching certificate until you have fulfilled your requirements. You may ask the USJF if any of your certificates are out of date. The headshot will be place on your USJF Teacher’s Card. \n\n   There are additional subjects that you may review to enhance your presentations. Review these presentations for your course preparations. \nOnce you are certified as an Assistant Teacher\, your Assistant Teacher certification is valid for four years. You will still have to renew your First Aid/CPR\, Safesport and Concussion during that time since these certifications are only valid for two years.
